Las Dalias in Sant Carles: from village bar to legendary market

Some places in Ibiza tell the island’s story better than any book, and Las Dalias is one of them. It began as a village bar in Sant Carles de Peralta and today it is Ibiza’s best-known hippy market, with hundreds of stalls and a stage that has welcomed musicians from all over the world.

A bar for the village, in 1954

On 4 November 1954, the feast day of Sant Carles, Joan Marí, a local farmer and carpenter, opened a bar with a dance floor beside the track that led to Santa Eulària. There wasn’t even a proper road back then. That first party brought together the farming families of the area, and Las Dalias quickly became the meeting point of the north of the island.

In the sixties and seventies the hippies arrived. Many bought old farmhouses around Sant Carles and in the evenings they ended up at Las Dalias. The bar filled with music, with conversations in a dozen languages and with a way of life you can still feel there today.

The market was born on 14 February

The Saturday market opened on Valentine’s Day 1985 with just five stalls. It grew little by little to the more than 200 it has today, and on some Saturdays in August it welcomes up to 20,000 visitors. In 2005 the Night Market followed, a calmer evening version that runs in summer.

The business is still in the family. The founder’s son, also called Joan Marí and known across the island as Juanito de Las Dalias, has taken the project as far as Madrid and Amsterdam with Las Dalias on the road, and artists such as Manu Chao and Kiko Veneno have played on its stage. In 2024 it turned seventy.

What you’ll find and when to go

Ibiza and boho fashion, jewellery, ceramics, art, home décor and food from around the world, among the trees and almost always with music. It opens on Saturdays for most of the year (it closes in January) and on Sundays in some months. Opening times change with the season, so check its website before you go. In summer, look out for the Night Market evenings too.

A tip: avoid 11:30 to 14:00 on summer Saturdays, when traffic builds up on the road and the market sometimes reaches capacity. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon instead.

Getting there from Es Canar

Las Dalias is at kilometre 12 of the road from Santa Eulària to Sant Carles, about five kilometres from Santa Eulària. From our apartments in Es Canar it is a short drive or taxi ride. If you stay with us you can visit both originals in the same week: the Punta Arabí market on Wednesday, on our own avenue, and Las Dalias on Saturday.
